Breakwater Design Overview
This week we’re highlighting how the Cape San Blas breakwater is designed to fight erosion. The plan calls for eight near‑shore barriers placed by the existing rock jetty to absorb wave energy before it reaches the beach. Based on Gulf County and FDEP guidance, the system is projected to reduce wave‑driven erosion by ~60–80%, helping sand stay on the shoreline and protecting nearby habitats and properties.
- Eight breakwater segments planned near the current jetty.
- Goal: cut wave energy and promote natural sand deposition.
- Benefits: stabilize shoreline, support wildlife, and bolster property values.
Note: In Nov 2024, County Commissioners indicated timelines could slip to Spring 2025 due to budget factors. For official plans and renourishment documents, please contact Gulf County officials directly.
